Parents, we invite you to learn more about the new Kappa Alpha Theta house!

As this exciting new chapter takes shape, we know you may have questions about the new house, the building process, what the transition will look like, and what it means for your daughter and future generations of Thetas.

We’ve put together this Resource Link to provide helpful information and answers to some of the questions parents may have.

The Theta house will close in May 2027 to prepare for the teardown and rebuild.

With that exciting milestone, we know there will be important questions as to where the actives will live, how they will stay connected, and how they will have a space to build friendships and create memories, just as they would living in Theta. 

While there is no replacement for the Theta house, we are thrilled to have identified a plan that keeps our women living together and connected during this exciting transition. Last week, members of our Advisory Board, Corporation Board, and Building Beta Zeta Committee toured the North Commons (female-only living space) on OSU's campus. This is one of the newer residential spaces- featuring multiple meeting/lounge spaces per floor, two-person rooms, and four large bathrooms per floor (very similar to Theta's current set up in the house.) The floor also features a cleaning service that cleans bathrooms and common spaces at least twice per day, campus security options, and nearby food locations.

Housing and Residential Life has very kindly offered Theta an entire floor in the North Commons, as well as the opportunity to hire two interested Thetas to serve as an RA (Resident Advisor). The RAs will receive free housing on the floor in exchange for serving in this leadership role and upholding Housing and Residential Life policies and community standards, which are very similar to Theta’s policies regarding alcohol, drugs, guests, and other community expectations. 

With this knowledge, it has been jointly decided that the sophomore class and select Theta officers, as determined by the current bylaws, will live on a designated floor in the North Commons each year of the building project. There is a possibility for other interested Thetas to live on the floor or on a floor nearby as space allows.

This experience will provide the active members with the closest possible experience to living in Theta. North Commons provides space to live together, gather together, and have fun together, just as they would in Theta.

Most importantly, it gives our Theta women a place to live alongside their sisters and continue building the friendships and traditions that make the Theta experience so special.

This opportunity is exciting and sets everyone up for success when it is time to move back into the NEW, FABULOUS, WONDERFUL Theta house!

We know there will be questions to come, and we are working diligently to work out the details of this plan. However, we are very excited to share this plan with the active women as well as the parents.  We hope that this knowledge will provide some comfort and generate excitement for what is to come.

The process for living on the Theta floor in the North Commons will be the exact same as if the women were to live in the Theta house- rising sophomores (current PC26) and select Theta officers (once selected for 2027) will be required to sign a Theta housing contract (as well as an OSU Housing and Residential Life contract) to solidify their commitment for the following academic year.

There will be an interest form sent out after Chapter tonight to gather names of any women in pledge classes outside of PC26 who might want to live on the North Commons floor and/or serve as an RA. The current Theta housing formula will be used to determine room selections, and there will be a room change at semester to allow for new roommates and connecting with new friends. There will be as many similarities to the current Theta housing structure as possible. 

 A new Theta housing contract is currently in the works to reflect these changes, and we expect it to be available in the same timeframe as typical Theta housing contracts. The current Theta bylaws include living requirements for the Theta house. These bylaws will be followed as closely as possible during the rebuild. 

 CHAPTER FACILITY REGULATIONS 

Section 1. An active member, unless she is living at home, shall live in the chapter facility as an obligation of membership assumed with initiation. (Kappa Alpha Theta Bylaws, Article IV, Section 7, A). 

Section 2. These chapter officers shall live in the chapter facility except in special instances determined by the advisory board chair: 

• President, Vice President of Operations, Vice President of Administration, Vice President of Finance, 

• Vice President of Membership, Vice President of Panhellenic, Vice President of Education, Vice President of External Affairs, 

• Vice President of Diversity Equity and Inclusion, Facility Management Director, and New Member Director. 

Section 3. Order of Preference for Filling the Chapter Facility 

1. Officers required to live in according to Article VII, Section 2B.

2. Freshman Member Class (move in as Sophomores) 

3. Sophomore Member Class (move in as Juniors)

4. Junior Member Class (move in as Seniors) 

 The Scholarship chair will rank members within each Member class to live in the facility by the following formula: (Cumulative Hours/50) + GPA(Cumulative)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Will my daughter be required to have an OSU meal plan while living on the Theta floor?

No! OSU does not require sophomores, juniors, or seniors living on campus to have a meal plan, but it is an option if you'd like to purchase one.

Where will Theta hold Recruitment activities while the house is under construction? 

The Starlight Terrace in the OSU Student Union has been booked for 2027 and 2028 Panhellenic Recruitment.

What is the cost of the North Commons?

Current pricing per OSU for the North Commons is approximately $3,300 per semester.

Will my daughter still be responsible for Theta dues? And what is the cost?

Yes. There will still be Theta dues that cover things like social events, Homecoming, sisterhood events, Recruitment, etc. This cost is being configured and will be shared with active members and parents ASAP. 

What is the timeline for Theta housing contracts and OSU Housing and Residential Life contracts?

Theta housing contracts are typically signed by November 1 each year. Because of the upcoming changes, the timeline may be extended slightly, and we will keep everyone informed as the process moves forward.  

OSU Housing and Residential Life contracts will be signed in the Spring semester. 

Why the North Commons? Why live on OSU's campus?

Living together is an experience that all Thetas should have. It creates bonds, friendships, experiences, problem-solving opportunities, and more. Living together in the North Commons is the closest experience possible to living in Theta while the house is under construction.

With similar conduct policies, security measures, and group living set ups, we are thankful to OSU Housing and Residential Life for giving our members the opportunity to be together while a new Theta house is being built. It allows Theta women to continue experiencing the community and sisterhood of living together — while being just steps away from everything OSU has to offer.

My daughter is in PC26. She will live in the North Commons for the 2027-2028 academic year, but will she be required to live there after?

No. The only required members to live in the North Commons are the sophomore class and select Theta officers. PC26 will be required to live in the North Commons for the 2027-2028 academic year (their sophomore year), but then they are welcome to find alternate housing off campus (if they choose to do so and if they are not serving as a Theta officer required to live on the Theta floor). PC27 would take their place as sophomores during the Fall 2028 semester. However, those living in the North Commons when the new Theta house is completed will move into the new house- an opportunity they won't want to miss! 

What is the timeline for the new Theta house?

With a closing date of May 2027, we are hopeful to have members living in the new house for the Spring 2029 semester. We will be sure to keep everyone updated as to building progress and timeline updates as they come. 

 My daughter is an older member and won't live on the Theta floor. Will she still have access to hang out and socialize?

Yes! All Theta members will have access to the Theta floor and may come study and be with friends as they please. 

 How many women share a bed in the North Commons?

Two women share a room. 

How many women share a bathroom in the North Commons?   

Approximately 16 women share a bathroom with multiple showers, sinks, and stalls. 

Will my daughter get to see a room in the North Commons before moving in?

Yes! Women will be able to visit the Theta floor either this semester or next to see the rooms, bathrooms, and living areas. 

Where will my daughter park while living on the Theta floor in the North Commons?

Thetas living in the North Commons can purchase an OSU Residential parking pass to park in the Commons parking lot.  

I have friends who have had daughters in other sororities who have rebuilt or remodeled their chapter facilities, and they haven't provided housing options for them. Why is Theta choosing to have a floor in the North Commons?

Theta was given a unique opportunity that has not been offered to or explored by other chapters. This opportunity is the closest living situation to the Theta house that can be provided while the house is under construction.

This opportunity provides something very special during this transition: a chance for Theta women to live together, build community, make new friendships, create memories, and experience sisterhood in a group living community – an experience that off-campus living does not provide. We are incredibly thankful for this opportunity and excited for what is to come!
